The smell of the buttery crunchy crisps and cinnamon-flavored apple pieces in my Grandma’s best apple crisp recipe without oats will always remind me of my childhood.
This apple crisp recipe is one of my all-time favorite desserts, my grandma and my mum used to make when I was little.
By the way, in Germany, we call crisps – Streusel.
This apple crisp recipe is incredibly easy to make and will be ready in around 30 minutes.
And yes, you read correctly, this apple crisp dessert is made without oats. Instead, there is an ingredient you might not expect. I will tell you all about it a bit later.

The beauty of homemade apple crisp lies in its quick preparation. It’s ready to be served in less than 30 minutes of baking time.
Savor it as a delightful dessert on its own, or enhance it with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
The dish can be conveniently prepared ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator until you’re ready to bake the apple crisp dessert al la Grandma..
In my view, this simple apple crisp without oats is the ideal conclusion to a light dinner, such as our succulent chicken breast in white wine sauce or our authentic Spanish tortilla.
My preferred apples to use are Granny Smith because they are not too sweet and have a slightly sour taste. This is perfect when I marinate the apple pieces with a little bit of cinnamon sugar before putting them into the baking dish.

Here is a tip for you: If you’re not fond of apples, you could consider replacing them with fresh plums or a combination of plums and peaches. Our crisp topping works wonderfully with a variety of fruits.
My Secret Ingredient For The Best Apple Crisp Recipe Without Oats
What makes my apple crisp recipe so special is my ‘secret’ ingredient that has been handed down from my grandma to me and my family.
In addition to flour, butter, and sugar, I am adding ground almonds to the crisp dough. It makes the crisps so flavorsome, and crunchy with a slightly nutty flavor.

Grandma’s Delicious And Easy Apple Crisp Recipe Without Oats
Equipment
Ingredients
- 5 to 6 apples ( I am using Granny Smith)
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 3/4 cup ground almonds
- 125 grams (4oz) butter plus a little bit extra for greasing the baking dish
Cinnamon Sugar
- 5 tbsp sugar
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
Instructions
- First off, wash the apples and peel and core them.5 to 6 apples ( I am using Granny Smith)
- Cut the apples into chunky pieces.
- Put the apple pieces into a bowl and sprinkle over 2 tablespoon of cinnamon sugar. Mix well
- Set aside for later.
Making The Crisp
- Put the flour, sugar, ground almonds, and butter into a bowl.1 cup all-purpose flour, 1/2 cup sugar, 3/4 cup ground almonds, 125 grams (4oz) butter plus a little bit extra for greasing the baking dish
- Mix well with your hands until combined. The mixture should be crumbly but not too dry.
- Generously grease a baking dish with butter.
- Fill with the apple pieces.
- Crumble over the crisp dough until it is well covered.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 180 Degrees Celcius/350 Degrees Fahrenheit for around 30 minutes.
- Serve while still warm with ice cream and /or whipped cream. A drizzle with caramel or chocolate sauce would be lovely too.
