Pro Tip: This slow cooker pulled pork dish is ideal for a dinner party or for bringing to a potluck at a friend’s house.

Ingredients For Our Pulled Pork Slow Cooker Recipe

Let’s talk about our main ingredient, the pork: I highly recommend getting a pork shoulder roast. The bone and the higher fat content will give the meat extra flavor.

Furthermore, I choose not to remove the fatty pieces from the pork once it has finished cooking. I find that the rich, flavorful fat enhances the overall taste and texture of the meat. By mixing it in with the leaner portions, the dish becomes more savory and enjoyable.

However, if you have health concerns or personal preferences, it is perfectly fine to remove the fatty bits and pieces.

The sauce: You will notice that I am using two large brown onions, which I chop into fairly large pieces. Due to the extended cooking time, the onions will mostly dissolve, but they will serve as an excellent flavor enhancer.

The combination of the different condiments like the ketchup, BBQ sauce, as well as the Worcester sauce will give the pulled pork a beautiful stickiness.

Tip: If you enjoy milder flavors and find that spicy dishes aren’t to your liking, you can simply skip the chili flakes in the recipe. Otherwise, I recommend using all the ingredients as specified in the recipe card for the best flavor and balance.

After simmering in the slow cooker or crockpot on the high setting for 5 to 6 hours, you can enjoy succulent and flavorful pulled pork. It is the perfect dish to feed a crowd and serves as an ideal comfort food for those cold autumn and winter evenings.

Step 1 – Prepare The Sauce

First, gather the spices and herbs, including salt, smoked paprika dried thyme, chili flakes (optional), and freshly ground pepper.
Next, roughly chop some brown onions and a couple of garlic cloves and transfer them into a small to medium-sized bowl.
Now, we are adding condiments such as ketchup, barbecue sauce, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, and either wholegrain or Dijon mustard. Mix everything thoroughly until well combined.

Step 2 – The Slow Cooker Does All The Hard Work

Place the piece of pork into the slow cooker and pour the sauce over it, along with the onions and garlic. Ensure it is spread out evenly so the pork is fully covered.
Choose either the high setting for 5 hours or the low setting for about 8 hours on your slow cooker. Put the lid on and let the slow cooker do all the hard work for you.
After half of the cooking time, check on the meat to make sure it’s still covered and simmering away nicely. If needed, give it a gentle stir.

Step 3 – Pull The Pork Apart And Enjoy

Depending on the setting of your slow cooker, the meat will be ready in either 5 or around 8 hours. Imagine, the delicious smell. Ah, so good. All you need to do now is pull the pork apart with the help of two forks.
Mix the meat thoroughly with the sauce and it’s all done.
I serve my pulled pork generously heaped on a soft ciabatta bun, with homemade coleslaw and roasted potatoes on the side.
It is absolutely delicious; trust me.
